In a major boost to India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat vision and Bengal’s growing manufacturing ecosystem, Uttarpara-based Titagarh Rail Systems has announced plans to become fully self-reliant in the manufacturing of aluminium railway coaches by FY27.

The company, one of India’s leading railway and mobility solutions manufacturers, had earlier relied on imports of flat packs and sub-assemblies for aluminium coaches from Italy-based Firema. However, Titagarh has now taken a significant step towards self-sufficiency by importing advanced machinery required to manufacture these components entirely within India.

Speaking on the development, Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Titagarh Rail Systems Limited, stated that the company is aiming to become fully integrated in aluminium coach manufacturing, right from raw materials and extrusion to the final product by FY27 and early FY28.

The Uttarpara facility in West Bengal has already showcased its capabilities by supplying aluminium coaches for the Pune Metro project. Building on this success, Titagarh has secured an additional order to manufacture 12 more aluminium train sets, further strengthening its footprint in India’s metro rail sector.

The development also opens doors to a much larger opportunity, high-speed rail manufacturing. Globally, aluminium coaches are widely used in bullet trains due to their lightweight, durability, and energy efficiency. Titagarh believes its growing expertise in aluminium coach production could position the company to participate in India’s future high-speed rail ecosystem.

The company is also set to become a fully integrated manufacturer of both aluminium and stainless-steel railway coaches, further strengthening India’s domestic rail manufacturing capabilities.

For Bengal, this marks another major industrial success story. With advanced railway manufacturing expanding in Uttarpara, the state continues to strengthen its position as a key hub for infrastructure and engineering excellence in India.

As India pushes towards self-reliance in strategic manufacturing sectors, Bengal-based Titagarh Rail Systems is emerging as a key player in shaping the future of rail mobility — from metro coaches to the possibility of high-speed trains.
