Bengal EV Growth Surges 154.7%, Outpacing National Average
West Bengal is accelerating towards a cleaner mobility future, with electric vehicle (EV) adoption witnessing a remarkable surge in 2025–26. Despite challenges such as limited charging infrastructure, the state has recorded one of the fastest growth rates in EV adoption across India.
According to the latest data, EV registrations in Bengal increased by 154.7%, reaching 133,388 units in 2025–26. This sharp rise has pushed the state’s EV penetration to 9.8%, surpassing the national average of 8.2%, a significant milestone in India’s transition towards sustainable transportation.
Strong Growth Across Vehicle Segments
The growth in EV adoption is not limited to a single category but is visible across multiple segments of the automotive market:
- Electric two-wheelers grew by 15%, reaching 27,769 units
- Electric cars saw a sharp rise of 89.8%, totaling 5,535 units
- Passenger electric three-wheelers recorded more than double the growth
This indicates a widespread shift in consumer preference, from personal mobility to last-mile connectivity solutions.
Overall Automotive Market Also Expands
The broader automotive sector in West Bengal is also on an upward trajectory. Total vehicle registrations in the state grew by 13.1% year-on-year, highlighting strong overall demand.
This dual growth suggests that EVs are not just replacing conventional vehicles but are contributing to the expansion of the overall mobility ecosystem.
Infrastructure Gap Remains a Key Challenge
While adoption is rising rapidly, the development of charging infrastructure continues to lag behind. The current pace of infrastructure growth may not be sufficient to support long-term EV expansion unless addressed proactively.
However, the strong growth in EV adoption despite these challenges reflects increasing consumer confidence, improved affordability, and growing awareness about sustainable mobility.
What This Means for Bengal
The rapid rise in EV adoption could have far-reaching implications for West Bengal:
- Reduced dependence on fossil fuels
- Improved urban air quality
- Growth in EV-related industries and employment opportunities
As the state moves forward, the focus will need to shift towards strengthening infrastructure, policy support, and private investment to sustain this momentum.
The Road Ahead
West Bengal’s EV growth story highlights a critical shift in how mobility is evolving in the state. With demand already gaining pace, the next phase of growth will depend on how effectively the ecosystem adapts.
If supported by the right infrastructure and policy push, Bengal has the potential to emerge as a key player in India’s electric mobility transition.
