Durgapur is set to strengthen its position as a major industrial and energy hub as the proposed 800 MW Supercritical Thermal Power Station moves a step closer to execution.

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has received a Limited Notice to Proceed (LNTP) from Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) for the upcoming thermal power project in Durgapur. The development marks an important milestone in advancing one of the city’s major energy infrastructure initiatives.

The LNTP, valued at over ₹90 crore, allows BHEL to begin advanced engineering activities and procure critical long-lead equipment for the main plant package. This includes essential systems such as the boiler, turbine and generator, enabling preparatory work to commence ahead of the final contract award.

The proposed 800 MW unit will add modern supercritical power generation capacity to DVC’s existing network. Supercritical thermal technology is considered more efficient than conventional thermal power systems, helping improve fuel efficiency and electricity generation while supporting rising power demand across eastern India.

The notice will remain valid for 10 months, providing a crucial window for preparatory work before full-scale execution begins. The project is expected to play a significant role in strengthening energy infrastructure in the region while reinforcing Durgapur’s importance in West Bengal’s industrial growth story.

As large-scale investments continue to flow into infrastructure, manufacturing and energy, projects such as this further underline Durgapur’s growing strategic importance in powering eastern India’s future.
