Kolkata, [18/08/2025] – The Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port, Kolkata (SMPK) has commissioned its first Public-Private Partnership (PPP) terminal at Khidderpore Docks, marking a significant step in the modernization of the city’s historic dock system.
The facility, developed by Century Ports Ltd at a cost of ₹190 crore, is equipped with modern cargo-handling infrastructure including a mobile harbour crane, barge unloader, advanced yard equipment, and a Terminal Operating System (TOS).
With an initial handling capacity of 1.65 lakh TEUs of containers and 3.3 lakh tonnes of other cargo, the terminal is expected to boost efficiency and cargo throughput at Kolkata Port.
The concession agreement for the project, signed in 2022 for a 30-year period, will enable enhanced multimodal connectivity through road, rail, and inland waterways.
“The inauguration of our first PPP terminal at Khidderpore Docks paves the way for increased cargo handling and encourages the modernisation of other berths at the dock. It is the result of relentless effort, collaboration and vision,” said SMPK Chairman Rathendra Raman.
SMPK has also revealed a pipeline of over ₹4,000 crore PPP projects that are scheduled to become operational at both Kolkata and Haldia docks in the coming year.
The commissioning of the terminal is being seen as a crucial development in strengthening Kolkata’s role as a key logistics and maritime hub in eastern India.
