Kolkata’s iconic Hooghly riverfront is set for a major transformation as the Government of West Bengal accelerates beautification and restoration work across several historic ghats ahead of Durga Pujo this year.

As part of the initiative, six ghats along the Hooghly River in Kolkata and Howrah are being renovated with a focus on infrastructure upgrades, improved public amenities and enhanced aesthetics. Key ghats currently undergoing beautification include Bagbazar Ghat, Babu Ghat, Ramakrishnapur Ghat and Bandha Ghat, among others.

The extensive restoration aims to preserve the heritage and cultural significance of Kolkata’s traditional riverfront while improving accessibility and visitor experience for residents, devotees and tourists. The Hooghly ghats have long served as an integral part of the city’s cultural identity, especially during major festivals such as Durga Pujo.

The riverfront redevelopment is expected to enhance cleanliness, improve lighting and seating infrastructure, and create a more welcoming public space along the banks of the Hooghly River.

Adding another cultural dimension to the city’s evolving riverfront landscape, the authorities of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port have also initiated plans to establish a museum in Kolkata dedicated to the life and legacy of Syama Prasad Mukherjee.

With restoration work progressing steadily, Kolkata is preparing to welcome Durga Pujo with a renewed and revitalized riverfront, blending heritage conservation with modern urban development.
