Websol Energy’s ₹3,000 Crore Solar Expansion to Power India’s Renewable Future from West Bengal
Websol Energy System Limited, one of India’s earliest manufacturers of solar cells and modules, has announced a massive expansion plan from its base in Falta, West Bengal. The company, known for its high-efficiency Mono PERC technology, will expand manufacturing capacity by 4 GW of solar cells and 4 GW of solar modules through a wholly owned subsidiary. This transformative project will involve an investment of approximately ₹3,000 crore.
Current Capacity and Growth Path
At present, Websol operates:
- 600 MW solar cell line
- 550 MW solar module line
Both are running at around 90% utilization, showcasing strong demand and operational efficiency.
An additional 600 MW solar cell line (Phase II) is already under development and scheduled to become operational by October 2025. Once active, Websol’s solar cell manufacturing capacity will increase to 1.2 GW.
The Mega Expansion Plan
To meet the surging demand for solar energy in India, the Board of Directors has approved a phased expansion strategy based on Topcon technology:
- Phase III (June 2027): 2 GW solar cell line + 2 GW solar module line
- Phase IV (June 2028): 2 GW solar cell line + 2 GW solar module line
Financing the Future
The expansion will be financed through a mix of internal accruals and lending facilities, highlighting Websol’s robust financial planning and long-term vision.
A Boost for West Bengal & India’s Energy Transition
This large-scale investment reinforces West Bengal’s growing significance in India’s renewable energy landscape. By scaling up solar manufacturing capabilities, Websol is not only strengthening domestic production but also contributing to India’s mission of becoming a global leader in clean and green energy.
As India accelerates towards its renewable energy targets, projects like Websol’s capacity expansion are set to play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable and self-reliant future.
