Himadri to manufacture India's first Carbon Nanotubes in Bengal with ₹70 crore investment
West Bengal is set to become home to India's first commercial Carbon Nanotube (CNT) manufacturing facility, as Himadri Speciality Chemical announces plans to establish a 200 tonnes per annum (TPA) pilot plant in the state. Backed by an investment of ₹70 crore, the facility is expected to be commissioned in the fourth quarter of FY27.
Carbon Nanotubes are among the most advanced engineered materials in the world and are widely used in lithium-ion batteries, electric vehicles, semiconductors, consumer electronics, aerospace, energy storage systems and high-performance composites. Commercial production of CNTs is currently concentrated in countries such as Japan, China and several European nations. Himadri's project will make it the first company in India to manufacture Carbon Nanotubes domestically.
The project is expected to strengthen India's advanced battery materials ecosystem by reducing dependence on imported CNTs while supporting the country's growing electric mobility and clean energy sectors. It also reinforces West Bengal's emergence as a destination for high-value manufacturing and advanced materials.
The CNT facility forms part of Himadri Speciality Chemical's long-term battery materials strategy. The company has set an ambitious target of generating more than ₹30,000 crore in revenue from its battery materials business by 2032, reflecting its focus on next-generation technologies and energy transition.
With demand for electric vehicles, semiconductors and energy storage solutions rising rapidly across the world, Himadri's investment represents a significant milestone for both India and West Bengal. The project not only introduces a critical strategic material to domestic manufacturing but also positions Bengal at the forefront of India's advanced manufacturing and innovation ecosystem.
