JSW Wins Kolkata Port’s Biggest-Ever PPP Deal, Boosting Bengal’s Trade Ambitions
In a major development for West Bengal’s maritime infrastructure, JSW Infrastructure has secured the largest Public-Private Partnership (PPP) project ever awarded by the Kolkata Dock System. The company has received a 30-year concession to develop the Outer Container Terminal and modernize Berths 1–5 at Netaji Subhas Dock, marking a significant milestone for the future of trade and logistics in Eastern India.
The ambitious project is expected to add around 0.93 million TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) of annual container handling capacity, substantially increasing operational efficiency at Kolkata Dock System, East India’s largest riverine port.
This latest win further strengthens JSW Infrastructure’s growing presence at Kolkata Port. Earlier, the company had already undertaken a ₹740-crore berth modernization project, and with the addition of the new terminal development, the total container handling capacity at Kolkata Dock System is projected to rise to nearly 1.4 million TEUs.
The expansion is expected to significantly improve vessel turnaround time, reduce congestion, and streamline cargo movement. This will not only benefit businesses operating through the port but also enhance regional connectivity and logistics efficiency.
Strategically located, Kolkata Port plays a vital role in trade for Northeast India, Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. With this large-scale modernization, the port is expected to further strengthen its position as a crucial gateway for regional and international commerce.
The project is also seen as a major boost for Bengal’s economic growth story, reinforcing the state’s importance in India’s infrastructure and logistics ecosystem. As investments continue to flow into ports, transport, and industrial infrastructure, Kolkata is steadily emerging as a stronger hub for trade-driven development in Eastern India.
