Kolkata has added another milestone to its growing artificial intelligence ecosystem with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) inaugurating East India's first AI Centre of Excellence at Heritage Institute of Technology (HITK).

The new Centre of Excellence has been established as an industry-academia collaboration to equip students and faculty with practical artificial intelligence skills while strengthening the talent pipeline for the rapidly evolving technology sector.

The initiative will focus on AI solution development, live industry projects, faculty development, capstone project mentoring, and TCS-designed elective courses. Through this model, students will gain hands-on exposure to real-world AI applications and emerging enterprise technologies while working on industry-relevant problems.

Initially, the Centre of Excellence will cater to students at Heritage Institute of Technology before expanding to other TCS-priority institutions. Similar AI Centres of Excellence are also planned at the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST), Shibpur, and Jadavpur University.

The Kolkata launch is part of TCS's larger plan to establish 50 AI Centres of Excellence across India during the year, reinforcing its commitment to developing AI-ready talent through deeper collaboration with higher education institutions.

The announcement comes shortly after TCS unveiled its Google Gemini Experience Center and India's first Oracle AI Data Platform Lab & Centre of Excellence in Kolkata. Together, these initiatives underscore the company's growing investment in the city's technology ecosystem and its role in advancing enterprise AI adoption.

For Kolkata, the latest development further strengthens the city's credentials as an emerging hub for artificial intelligence, digital innovation, research, and advanced technology education. With global technology companies expanding AI-focused initiatives and educational institutions embracing industry-led programmes, the city is steadily building a robust ecosystem for next-generation digital talent.

As demand for AI professionals continues to rise across industries, collaborations between academia and industry are expected to play a crucial role in preparing students with practical skills while supporting India's broader digital transformation journey.
