The Kolkata metropolitan region may soon witness the rise of two iconic attractions along the Hooghly River, as plans are underway to install a massive 60-foot-tall Maa Durga murti and a giant observation wheel, named the “Kolkata Eye,” at Ramkrishnapur Ghat in Howrah.

The ambitious initiative is part of a larger tourism and beautification drive aimed at transforming the riverfront into a vibrant, year-round destination. Unlike traditional Durga Pujo celebrations that attract crowds during the festive season, the giant Maa Durga installation is envisioned as a permanent cultural landmark overlooking the Ganga, symbolising Bengal’s rich heritage and spiritual identity.

Adding to the excitement, the proposed “Kolkata Eye” observation wheel could offer breathtaking panoramic views of the Hooghly River, the Kolkata skyline, and key landmarks across the metropolitan region. Inspired by iconic observation wheels in major global cities, the attraction is expected to create a unique tourism experience for residents and visitors alike.

Officials believe the twin developments have the potential to significantly boost tourism in the Howrah riverfront region, increase footfall, support local businesses, and generate economic opportunities. The project could also contribute to strengthening the identity of Greater Kolkata as a city where culture, heritage, and modern urban experiences coexist.

If realised successfully, the Kolkata Eye and the towering Maa Durga installation may emerge as major landmarks, reshaping the skyline and creating a new attraction on the banks of the Ganga.

The vision reflects a broader push towards riverfront development and tourism-led urban transformation in the Kolkata metropolitan area.
