GRSE Signs $62.44 Million Deal with Carsten Rehder to Build Hybrid Vessels
Kolkata-based Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) Ltd has achieved another milestone on the global stage by signing a USD 62.44 million contract with Hamburg-based Carsten Rehder Schiffsmakler und Reederei GmbH & Co. KG for the construction of four hybrid multi-purpose vessels. The agreement also includes a provision for two additional ships in the future.
The deal was signed by Cdr Shantanu Bose, IN (Retd), Director (Shipbuilding), GRSE, and Thomas Rehder, Managing Director, Carsten Rehder, in the presence of senior officials from both organisations.
Key Highlights of the Vessels
- Length: 120 metres | Width: 17 metres
- Hybrid Propulsion: Battery-assisted for improved fuel efficiency
- Cargo Capacity: 7,500 tonnes in a single hold
- Flexible Cargo Handling: Suitable for bulk, general, and project cargo
- Renewable Energy Ready: Special deck design to transport multiple windmill blades
- Containers: Can be stowed on hatch covers
This contract builds upon the ongoing 7,500 DWT multi-purpose vessel project already being executed at GRSE’s Kolkata yard for Carsten Rehder. The programme started in June 2024 with an initial order of four vessels and has since grown with additional orders in September, December 2024, and March 2025 — taking the total tally to eight ships.
On April 17, 2025, GRSE commenced steel cutting for the CORAL 7500 DWT MPV series, marking its first major international commercial export order.
With this latest deal, GRSE is not only strengthening India’s footprint in global shipbuilding but also aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) decarbonisation targets, promoting sustainable and future-ready maritime solutions.
