JSW Infrastructure Set to Invest ₹832 Crore in Kolkata Dock System
Kolkata’s maritime infrastructure is set for another major upgrade as JSW Infrastructure Ltd. is likely to secure the rights for the integrated development of two new outer container terminals and five existing berths at Netaji Subhas Dock (NSD) under the Kolkata Dock System of Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port.
The project, valued at ₹832.25 crore, is expected to significantly strengthen cargo handling capacity at one of eastern India’s most important ports. JSW Infrastructure emerged as the highest bidder by quoting a royalty of ₹3,701 per twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU), positioning itself to take charge of the ambitious expansion.
Under the proposed development, the company will construct two new outer container handling berths while also taking over operations of five existing berths at NSD. Once operational, the upgraded infrastructure is expected to handle a combined capacity of 930,230 TEUs along with multipurpose cargo, enhancing efficiency and trade movement through Kolkata.
This marks JSW Infrastructure’s second major project win at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port. Last year, the company secured the bid for reconstruction of Berth No. 8 and mechanisation of Berths 7 and 8 at NSD, backed by an investment of ₹832 crore. That project focuses on modernising container handling operations through the installation of Rail Mounted Quay Cranes, aimed at improving turnaround time and operational efficiency.
The latest investment signals growing confidence in Kolkata’s port ecosystem and could further strengthen the city’s position as a crucial maritime and logistics hub for eastern and northeastern India. As trade volumes continue to rise, infrastructure expansion at the Kolkata Dock System is expected to play a key role in supporting future economic growth.
