Malda Eyes Global Markets With Target of 300 MT Mango Exports This Season
Malda, widely known as the mango capital of India, is preparing for a major leap in international exports this season, with a target of exporting 250–300 metric tonnes (MT) of mangoes to markets across Europe, the USA, the UK, Scotland, the UAE, Bhutan, and several other countries.
The export initiative is being carried out across 60 selected orchards covering nearly 70 hectares under the supervision of the state horticulture department and the Central Institute of Sub-Tropical Horticulture.
Exports are expected to begin in June and could generate business worth an estimated ₹2.5–4.5 crore. The target marks a significant rise from last year’s exports of just 15 MT, highlighting the growing global demand for Malda’s premium mango varieties.
To meet international quality standards, farmers are adopting paper-wrapping techniques and reducing the use of chemical pesticides. These practices are aimed at ensuring better fruit quality and compliance with export regulations in overseas markets.
Malda is expected to produce around 3.25 lakh metric tonnes of mangoes this season, led by renowned varieties such as Himsagar, Lakshmanbhog, and Fazli, all of which remain highly sought-after both in India and abroad.
The development reflects the increasing global potential of Bengal’s agricultural sector and showcases how local produce from the state is steadily finding recognition on the international stage.
