Ropeway Plan to Boost Darjeeling–Kalimpong Connectivity
The Government of India has directed the Government of West Bengal to explore the feasibility of establishing ropeway connections across key hill routes: Ghoom to Darjeeling, Darjeeling to Bijanbari, and Delo to Kalimpong. These projects are being conceptualised under the Union Government’s ambitious Parvatmala Scheme, which aims to improve mobility in hilly terrains through modern ropeway networks.
Currently, NH110, the primary highway connecting Siliguri and Darjeeling, follows the Sukna–Kurseong–Ghoom route. Formerly known as NH55, this highway now handles more than 15,000 vehicles daily, far exceeding its intended capacity. This surge in traffic often results in severe congestion, particularly during peak tourist seasons, affecting both residents and visitors alike.
To address these challenges, a ropeway system could offer a scenic, faster, and eco-friendly transport alternative. It has the potential to not only ease the burden on NH110 but also enhance connectivity between major tourist destinations in the region.
In addition, NHIDCL has initiated a feasibility study and is preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for an alternative highway to Darjeeling, signalling a comprehensive approach toward improving hill mobility and infrastructure.
If implemented, this ropeway network could mark a transformative step for the Darjeeling–Kalimpong belt, boosting tourism, reducing travel time, and supporting sustainable development in the Himalayas.
