Kolkata shines on the global stage! Dr. Mridula Ghosh, a distinguished academic and long-time friend of Ukraine, was awarded the Order of Merit (Third Class) by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on August 24, Ukraine’s Independence Day, at a ceremony in Kyiv’s St. Sophia Square.
Dr. Ghosh, Associate Professor at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and Chair of the East European Development Institute, was recognised for her significant contributions to interstate cooperation, promoting Ukraine internationally, and charitable activities. President Zelenskyy also praised her deep command of the Ukrainian language, reflecting her enduring connection to the country.
The Embassy of Ukraine in India highlighted her efforts in strengthening Ukraine-India relations, building people-to-people ties, and remaining in Kyiv during the ongoing conflict.
An alumna of Gokhale Memorial School, Lady Brabourne College, and Presidency College, Dr. Ghosh earned her PhD in International Relations from Kyiv Taras Shevchenko University. Recently, Jadavpur University Press published her Bengali translation of poems by Taras Shevchenko, Ukraine’s greatest poet, further bridging cultures.
Dr. Ghosh’s recognition underscores Kolkata’s global contributions in academia, culture, and diplomacy, inspiring pride for the city and the nation.
