Kolkata is celebrating a proud moment as innovator Tunir Sahoo has won the James Dyson Award 2025 (India) for his groundbreaking healthcare device – JivaScope.
JivaScope is a pocket-sized, AI-powered device that allows anyone to self-screen heart and lung diseases within minutes. What makes it remarkable is its ability to work without doctors, internet, or electricity, making it a powerful solution for rural and low-resource settings where access to healthcare remains limited.
Tunir was inspired to invent JivaScope during his field visits to rural Bihar, where patients often waited days for basic chest exams, with only one doctor serving thousands. He observed how cases of asthma, pneumonia, and heart failure went undetected due to the lack of reliable tools. This drove him to design an affordable, AI-powered auscultation device that empowers individuals to take charge of their health.
For winning the award, Tunir receives ₹6 Lakhs (£5,000) in prize money. He plans to use it to fund clinical trials and secure patents, bringing JivaScope one step closer to making a real-world impact.
Speaking about the recognition, Tunir shared:
“Winning the James Dyson Award feels truly humbling, as past winners have been a source of immense motivation for me. This recognition validates the vision behind JivaScope and gives me a platform to make early, accessible healthcare a reality for millions.”
Tunir’s achievement not only highlights the spirit of innovation with purpose but also puts Kolkata on the global stage for healthcare technology. JivaScope represents the kind of impactful invention that can transform lives, particularly in underserved communities.
From Kolkata’s innovation hub to global recognition, this is a story of determination, vision, and purpose-driven technology.
