Adani Group Eyes Restoration of Kolkata’s Historic Writers’ Buildings

Kolkata’s iconic Writers’ Buildings could be set for a major restoration push, with the Adani Group reportedly exploring the possibility of taking up the conservation of the historic landmark.

Representatives of the Adani Group recently inspected Writers’ Buildings along with senior officials from the West Bengal Public Works Department (PWD) to assess the structure’s condition and understand the possible scope of restoration.

Any restoration work would have to retain the heritage character of Writers’ Buildings, including its historic façade, architectural details and original features.

The development comes ahead of Gautam Adani’s expected visit to Kolkata on September 24 for the proposed Adani Aarogya Mandir project in New Town. The Writers’ Buildings restoration plan could reportedly be formally announced during his visit.

The Adani Group is already involved in the restoration of Kumartuli Ghat, one of Kolkata’s important cultural and heritage locations. A potential Writers’ Buildings project would further expand the group’s involvement in the conservation of Kolkata’s historic landmarks.

Writers’ Buildings has played a central role in Bengal’s administrative history and remains one of Kolkata’s most recognisable heritage structures. However, its restoration has remained a long-delayed project, with the building requiring extensive conservation and structural attention.

If the proposal receives approval, the Adani Group’s involvement could provide fresh momentum to the restoration of Writers’ Buildings while helping preserve one of Bengal’s most significant architectural and administrative landmarks for future generations.

For Kolkata, the proposed restoration could mark an important step towards protecting the city’s historic identity while giving a new lease of life to one of its most iconic buildings.
