The much-anticipated New Farakka Bridge, one of India’s longest bridges over the River Ganga, is nearing completion, marking a major milestone in Bengal’s road infrastructure. Once inaugurated, the bridge is expected to reduce travel time between Kolkata and Siliguri by almost two hours, significantly improving connectivity across North Bengal.

A Major Engineering Achievement

Spanning 2,580 metres, the New Farakka Bridge is a four-lane structure built parallel to the existing Farakka Barrage. It features 88 pillars, 86 spans, and nearly 300 streetlights, most of which are solar-powered, reflecting a commitment to sustainable infrastructure.

According to project updates, construction work is in its final stages, with all pillars already installed and one side of the lighting work completed. The bridge has been developed with an initial investment of ₹521 crore, sanctioned by the Government of India.

Boosting Connectivity Across North Bengal

Once operational, the bridge will make transportation faster and more efficient across several key districts, including Malda, Murshidabad, Uttar Dinajpur, Dakshin Dinajpur, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri. This improved connectivity is expected to benefit not only commuters but also trade and tourism in the region.

The New Farakka Bridge will ease congestion on the existing Farakka Barrage which currently handles heavy traffic daily and provide a safer, faster alternative for both passenger and freight movement.

Expected Inauguration in December 2025

Authorities have indicated that the bridge is likely to be inaugurated for vehicular movement by December 2025. Once launched, it will serve as a vital link between southern and northern Bengal, reinforcing the state’s economic and logistical network.

With this development, Bengal is set to take another stride towards modern, efficient, and sustainable infrastructure, strengthening the state’s position as an emerging hub for trade, tourism, and growth.
