West Bengal to Add 600 Buses Ahead of Durga Pujo, 1,000 Targeted by 2027

West Bengal is set to introduce around 600 buses across different routes ahead of Durga Pujo to meet the expected rise in passenger demand during the festive season.

The state Transport Department has also restored bus services on several routes that were discontinued earlier, aiming to strengthen public transport connectivity ahead of the annual festive rush.

The move is part of a larger plan to introduce 1,000 new buses across West Bengal by March 2027. Around 400 new buses have been sanctioned for purchase, with a majority expected to be allotted to the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC).

The upcoming fleet is expected to include electric and CNG-powered buses, supporting the state's efforts to expand public transport while gradually adding cleaner mobility options. Some of the new buses will also be allocated to the South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC) and other state-run transport corporations.

NBSTC to Receive Major Share of New Buses

NBSTC currently has nearly 700 buses, but only around 550 are operational. The remaining buses are affected by maintenance issues and staff shortages.

The addition of new buses is expected to strengthen NBSTC's operational capacity, particularly as passenger movement increases during the festive season.

Short-Distance Tours in North Bengal

The state is also exploring short-distance package tours in the northern districts. The initiative could provide additional travel options for passengers looking to explore tourist destinations in North Bengal during the festive period.

With Durga Pujo expected to bring a significant increase in travel across West Bengal, the planned bus additions and restoration of routes are aimed at ensuring smoother public transport services across the state.
