Bengal Gets ₹10,783 Crore Railway Infrastructure Boost

West Bengal is set to receive a major railway infrastructure boost as part of a ₹20,804 crore railway multitracking and capacity-enhancement programme approved by the Union Government.

Of the overall investment, projects worth ₹10,783 crore will cover three railway initiatives across five states, including West Bengal. The eastern package is expected to strengthen railway connectivity, improve network capacity and support faster passenger and freight movement across the region.

One of the key projects involving Bengal is the Kharagpur–Jharsuguda 4th line. The additional railway line is aimed at increasing capacity on an important east-central corridor and easing congestion on existing routes.

The Howrah–Mumbai railway route will also benefit from capacity enhancement measures. The route is strategically important for both passenger connectivity and the movement of freight between eastern and western India.

Across the eastern package, the projects will cover around 656 km, passing through 14 districts and nearly 4,790 villages. Around 56 lakh people are expected to benefit from the infrastructure upgrades.

The railway projects are also expected to provide a significant boost to freight transportation. Across all eight projects approved under the ₹20,804 crore programme, around 74 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of additional freight capacity is expected to be created.

The additional capacity will support the transportation of key commodities such as coal, steel, cement and containers, helping improve the efficiency of India's freight network and reduce congestion on existing railway routes.

For West Bengal, stronger railway capacity could have wider implications for industrial activity, logistics and regional connectivity. Improved freight movement can support industries and businesses that depend on efficient transportation, while additional passenger capacity can help address congestion on busy routes.

The projects are targeted for completion by 2029–30. Once completed, the railway upgrades are expected to strengthen Bengal's role in India's eastern transportation and freight network while improving connectivity between major economic centres.

For a state with Kolkata, Kharagpur and other important railway and industrial hubs, the expansion of railway infrastructure could provide another significant push to connectivity, logistics and economic activity across Bengal.
