West Bengal is set to add another major milestone to its railway manufacturing ecosystem as Kolkata-headquartered Jupiter Wagons Ltd. has announced plans to establish a new passenger coach manufacturing facility in Hooghly. The upcoming plant will manufacture Vande Bharat trains, Metro coaches, and other passenger rolling stock, further strengthening Bengal's role in India's railway modernisation.

The company has confirmed that the exact location of the proposed facility will be announced at a later stage.

The project will become West Bengal's second railway rolling stock manufacturing facility after the Uttarpara plant operated by Titagarh Rail Systems through its joint venture with Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL). That facility began production last year and marked Bengal's return as a key destination for passenger rail manufacturing.

Founded in 2006, Jupiter Wagons has grown into one of India's leading railway equipment manufacturers. The company currently operates nine manufacturing facilities across the country, including units at Bandel and Taratala in West Bengal. Its portfolio includes wagons, braking systems, railway components, and passenger rolling stock.

The new Hooghly plant aligns with the company's ambitious expansion strategy. Jupiter Wagons aims to increase its annual revenue from around ₹3,000 crore to ₹5,000 crore by FY2027-28 and further to ₹10,000 crore by FY2028-29, driven by rising demand for railway infrastructure and passenger mobility solutions.

Apart from manufacturing Vande Bharat and Metro coaches, the company has also expressed its willingness to manufacture tram cars and tracks if the proposed revival of Kolkata's iconic tram network moves ahead. Such a move could provide an additional boost to the city's public transport infrastructure while leveraging the company's manufacturing capabilities in the state.

The announcement comes at a time when India's railway sector is witnessing significant investment in modern passenger trains, metro systems, and indigenous manufacturing under the Make in India initiative. For West Bengal, the proposed facility represents another significant investment that is expected to strengthen the state's industrial ecosystem, generate employment opportunities, and reinforce its position as one of the country's leading railway manufacturing hubs.

With both Titagarh Rail Systems and Jupiter Wagons expanding their presence, Bengal is steadily emerging as a key centre for advanced railway rolling stock manufacturing, supporting India's vision of building world-class transportation infrastructure through domestic production.
