Kolkata, 09/01/2025 – In a landmark step towards innovation and sustainability, Bengal is gearing up to host India’s first-ever cold firecracker manufacturing unit, ending the country’s dependence on imports from China. This project is expected to transform the firecracker industry while ensuring greater safety, sustainability, and economic opportunities for local manufacturers.
A Shift Towards Safer and Greener Celebrations
Cold firecrackers are a type of pyrotechnic display that use liquid nitrogen and other chemicals to create sparkling visual effects. Unlike traditional firecrackers, they:
These unique features have made them popular in indoor events, weddings, parties, and even at cricket stadiums. At present, cold firecrackers worth nearly ₹200 crore are imported from China every year.
Bengal’s Role in Leading the Change
According to the All Bengal Trinamool Green Firecrackers Manufacturing Workers' Union, the state government has extended full support to set up the first cold firecracker factory in India. Two sites in South 24-Parganas – Champahati and Maheshtala – are being considered for the project.
“We have already chalked out a plan to set up a factory for cold firecrackers in Bengal. The principal secretary of the MSME department has assured us of full support,” said Sukdeb Naskar, General Secretary of the union.
Collaboration with Global Experts
To ensure the best practices in production, the manufacturers have tied up with LIT University, Nagpur, which is working with experts from Germany and the UK. Training for 250 firework manufacturers in cold firecracker production is set to begin in January next year.
Union president Sakti Pada Mondal highlighted, “This initiative will not only protect the interests of 1.5 lakh firecracker manufacturers in Bengal but also make celebrations safer and greener.”
A Safer Future for Bengal’s Firecracker Industry
The firecracker industry in Bengal has often faced challenges, including accidents and licensing issues. In response, the government has already constructed dedicated firecracker clusters to regulate small-scale production in safe zones. The upcoming cold firecracker plant is expected to bring a new era of safety, sustainability, and employment opportunities for thousands of workers.
Conclusion
With this pioneering step, Bengal is positioning itself as a leader in eco-friendly celebrations while boosting local manufacturing and reducing dependence on imports. The cold firecracker initiative marks a major milestone not just for Bengal, but for India’s fireworks industry as a whole.
