The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), one of India’s most iconic heritage railways, has reported a significant rise in both passenger footfall and revenue in the financial year 2025–26.
According to official data, the DHR recorded a total passenger footfall of 2,15,432 in FY26, compared to 1,83,003 in FY25, reflecting a 17.72% increase year-on-year. Revenue generation also saw a notable jump, rising from ₹22.12 crore to ₹25.37 crore, marking a 14.71% growth.
Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, the railway continues to be a major attraction in Darjeeling, often referred to as the “Queen of Hills.” The steady growth highlights the enduring appeal of the historic toy train among both domestic and international tourists.
Officials attribute this surge to a combination of curated tourism experiences, improved passenger services, infrastructure upgrades, and enhanced stakeholder engagement. These initiatives have significantly elevated the overall travel experience, making the journey more appealing to modern travellers.
Beyond tourism, the growth of the DHR is contributing meaningfully to the local economy, supporting livelihoods and creating opportunities for communities across the Darjeeling hills.
Looking ahead, authorities are planning to further enhance the railway’s offerings by introducing more world-class travel experiences and expanding the rolling stock, allowing more passengers to experience this unique journey through the mountains.
The recent performance of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway stands as a testament to how heritage infrastructure, when combined with strategic improvements, can drive sustainable tourism and economic growth in the region.
