Jadavpur University to get ₹250 crore state funding

Jadavpur University has received in-principle approval from the West Bengal Higher Education Department for a ₹250 crore contribution from the state government towards its Institute of Eminence programme.

The state funding will be provided over a period of five years. Jadavpur University was selected by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the Institute of Eminence scheme in 2018, but the implementation had remained pending over the requirement for a matching contribution from the state government.

The ₹250 crore state contribution was announced in the West Bengal Budget on June 22. Following the approval, Jadavpur University has formed a 10-member committee to coordinate the implementation of the programme and prepare the project report.

The university will now approach the UGC for its proposed ₹1,000 crore share under the Institute of Eminence programme. The state government has indicated that it will release its contribution once the UGC releases its funds.

If both contributions are released, the proposed ₹1,250 crore funding package could provide Jadavpur University with significant resources for strengthening academic infrastructure, research facilities and other institutional capabilities.

The development marks a major step forward for Jadavpur University’s long-pending Institute of Eminence plans and could support the university’s efforts to expand its academic and research ecosystem.
