Jadavpur University is set to receive ₹1,250 crore over the next five years under the Institute of Eminence programme, marking one of the largest investments in the institution's history. The funding package includes ₹1,000 crore from the Union Government and ₹250 crore from the Government of West Bengal.

The investment is aimed at strengthening the university's research capabilities, modernising laboratories, upgrading academic facilities, and improving campus infrastructure. According to Vice-Chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee, the funding will enable Jadavpur University to compete more effectively with India's leading institutions, including the IITs and NITs.

The announcement comes at a crucial time for the university. Once regarded as one of India's top engineering institutions, Jadavpur University has witnessed a decline in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) Engineering Rankings, dropping from 10th place in 2023 to 18th in 2025. University officials believe that improved infrastructure and research facilities will help attract and retain top students while enhancing academic excellence.

Around 70 percent of the grant will be allocated towards research infrastructure, including laboratories, equipment, and innovation facilities. The remaining 30 percent will be used to upgrade civil infrastructure across the campus.

The funding is also expected to address long-standing infrastructure challenges that have affected teaching and research. Better facilities could reduce dependence on alumni support for laboratory upgrades and improve the university's ability to compete with premier engineering institutions across the country.

For Kolkata and West Bengal, the investment represents a significant boost to the state's higher education ecosystem. A stronger Jadavpur University can contribute to cutting-edge research, foster innovation, support industry collaborations, and reinforce Kolkata's position as one of India's leading centres for education, technology, and scientific research.
