Japanese Investment Interest Grows in Bengal, Mitsubishi Eyes Semiconductor Opportunity
Japanese companies are showing growing interest in investment opportunities in West Bengal, with a delegation from Japan holding discussions with state authorities on strengthening economic and industrial ties. The development comes as Bengal looks to attract greater Japanese participation across emerging sectors.
A seven-member Japanese delegation led by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ayano Kunimitsu held discussions with Bengal Industries Minister Tapas Roy. Following the talks, Japanese companies are preparing to visit the state to explore potential investment opportunities.
Semiconductors have emerged as one of the key areas of interest. Mitsubishi has expressed interest in setting up a semiconductor unit in Bengal, potentially adding momentum to the state’s efforts to develop a stronger semiconductor and electronics ecosystem.
Renewable energy is another area where Japanese companies are seeking greater opportunities. Discussions highlighted the potential for renewable energy to account for a larger share of Bengal’s overall power mix, supporting the state’s transition towards cleaner energy.
The state is also seeking representation at a meeting in Delhi where the Japanese Ambassador is expected to interact with CEOs of Japanese companies operating in India. Such engagement could provide Bengal with an opportunity to directly showcase its industrial infrastructure, skilled workforce and investment potential to Japanese businesses.
Improving air connectivity between Kolkata and Japan was also discussed during the talks. Better direct connectivity could support business travel, tourism and stronger people-to-people exchanges between Bengal and Japan.
The renewed focus comes ahead of the 75th anniversary of India-Japan diplomatic relations in 2027. For West Bengal, stronger engagement with Japanese companies could open new opportunities across manufacturing, semiconductors, renewable energy, technology and other emerging sectors.
With Japanese investment interest gaining momentum, Bengal is looking to strengthen its position as an attractive destination for global companies seeking opportunities in eastern India.
