The long-awaited demolition and reconstruction work at Kavi Subhash (New Garia) Metro Station, the southern terminal of Kolkata Metro’s Blue Line, has officially begun.

The project marks a major step toward restoring operations and ensuring passenger safety after years of structural concerns surrounding the station. To facilitate metro operations during the reconstruction phase, a rake reversal point has been installed at Shahid Khudiram Metro Station, allowing trains to reverse direction temporarily.

As part of the repair process, the platform meant for Dakshineswar-bound trains at Kavi Subhash station will be demolished and rebuilt from the ground up.

Kavi Subhash Metro Station, commissioned in October 2010, had reportedly shown early signs of structural stress in 2014, when cracks were first noticed during a routine inspection. Over the years, concerns around the station’s structural integrity continued to grow.

The situation escalated significantly after commercial metro services at New Garia station were suspended from July 28, 2025, following the discovery of major cracks in platform pillars. Since then, commuters using the southern end of the Blue Line have faced operational disruptions and increased travel inconvenience.

The reconstruction contract for the station has already been awarded, and while the work was initially expected to begin after Durga Pujo last year, demolition activities have now officially commenced.

The Blue Line, one of Kolkata Metro’s busiest corridors connecting the northern and southern parts of the city, has been under considerable pressure since the suspension of services at its southern terminal. The rebuilding of Kavi Subhash station is expected to play a key role in restoring smoother operations and strengthening commuter confidence.

While the reconstruction may cause temporary inconvenience for daily passengers, the move is being seen as a necessary investment in the long-term safety and reliability of Kolkata’s metro infrastructure.

As work progresses, commuters across the city will be closely watching the timeline for the station’s revival and the eventual resumption of full-fledged services at Kavi Subhash.
