NHAI plans six-lane elevated corridor on Belghoria Expressway to ease Kolkata traffic congestion
In a major infrastructure development for the Kolkata Metropolitan Region, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has initiated the process for a proposed six-lane elevated corridor on the Belghoria Expressway (NH-2E) in West Bengal.
NHAI has floated a tender for preparing the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the project, which is aimed at reducing chronic congestion on one of Kolkata’s busiest road corridors. The consultancy contract, valued at ₹1.78 crore, will cover traffic surveys, engineering design, feasibility studies, environmental assessment and project cost estimation.
As per the tender timeline, bid submissions will close on June 16, while technical bids are scheduled to open on June 17.
The Belghoria Expressway serves as a crucial transport corridor connecting NH-19, Kolkata’s northern suburbs and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. It also acts as an important gateway for freight and passenger movement towards eastern and northeastern India.
With traffic volumes steadily increasing over the years, congestion on the expressway has become a major concern for daily commuters, commercial vehicles and logistics operators. The proposed elevated six-lane upgrade is expected to improve traffic movement, reduce travel time and strengthen regional connectivity.
The DPR will determine the project’s technical feasibility, alignment planning, environmental impact and estimated construction cost before the project moves towards further approvals and implementation.
If executed, the elevated corridor could become one of the most significant road infrastructure upgrades for the Kolkata region in recent years, further enhancing connectivity and supporting economic activity across eastern India.
