The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has announced a major urban infrastructure push with plans to construct 5,616 roads across five districts in and around the Kolkata Metropolitan Region. Backed by an investment of ₹8,487.83 crore from the Government of West Bengal, the initiative aims to significantly improve road connectivity, mobility, and overall quality of life in urban and semi-urban areas.
This extensive road development programme will benefit 128 urban local bodies and enhance access for residents across nearly 35,000 villages, making it one of the largest urban road initiatives undertaken in the region in recent years.
South 24 Parganas will account for the highest number of roads under the project. A total of 2,492 roads will be constructed across five municipalities.
In North 24 Parganas, KMDA will build 1,742 roads across 19 urban local bodies.
The Howrah district will witness the construction of 341 roads across Bally Municipality, Uluberia Municipality, and Howrah Municipal Corporation, with Howrah Municipal Corporation alone accounting for 157 roads.
In Hooghly district, 971 roads will be developed across 11 urban local bodies, improving last-mile connectivity and easing daily commuting challenges.
