Kolkata Airport to Get ₹337 Crore Expansion to Handle 4.5 Crore Passengers by 2032–33

Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is set for a major expansion with a ₹337 crore apron development planned on the southern side of the terminal. The project will create additional space for aircraft parking, servicing, refuelling and ground-handling operations and is expected to be completed over three years.

The expansion comes as passenger traffic at Kolkata Airport continues to grow. The airport handled around 2.2 crore passengers in 2025, while its annual terminal capacity has increased from 2.6 crore to 2.8 crore passengers.

As part of the ongoing capacity enhancement, domestic departure facilities have received an additional 993 sq m of space, while around 300 sq m is being added to international operations.

Kolkata Airport to Increase Aircraft Parking Bays

One of the key components of the expansion is the increase in aircraft parking capacity. The number of parking bays is planned to rise from the existing 73 to 132, providing the airport with significantly more space to accommodate aircraft and support ground operations.

The additional apron infrastructure will include facilities for aircraft servicing, refuelling and ground handling, strengthening Kolkata Airport’s ability to manage growing flight operations.

Kolkata Airport Targets 4.5 Crore Passengers by 2032–33

The ₹337 crore apron expansion forms part of a larger redevelopment plan aimed at significantly increasing Kolkata Airport’s passenger-handling capacity.

The airport is targeting an annual capacity of 4.5 crore passengers by 2032–33. The wider plans include a proposed U-shaped international terminal equipped with 21 aerobridges.

Around 60,000 sq ft of additional international passenger space is also planned as part of the airport’s future development.

Runway Handling Capacity Increased

Kolkata Airport has also enhanced its runway handling capability. The airport’s handling capacity has increased from 35 flights per hour to 45 flights per hour, allowing it to accommodate a higher volume of aircraft movements.

With passenger traffic, aircraft parking and flight operations all expected to grow, the planned expansion is aimed at preparing Kolkata Airport for increasing aviation demand in the coming years.

The combination of the ₹337 crore apron project and the wider terminal redevelopment is expected to strengthen Kolkata’s aviation infrastructure and support the city’s growing connectivity with domestic and international destinations.
