Kolkata and Siliguri Ring Roads Get Major Push as Bengal Secures ₹1,200 Crore for Road Projects

West Bengal is set for a major road infrastructure push, with ₹1,200 crore approved under the Central Road Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) for six road projects across the state.

The approval follows high-level discussions with the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), where a wider range of infrastructure projects were also discussed, including upgrades to state and national highways, bridges and regional road networks.

However, among the larger proposals, the planned greenfield ring roads around Kolkata and Siliguri could have the biggest long-term impact on Bengal’s transportation and logistics network.

Kolkata Ring Road Could Transform Freight Movement

A proposed 130–200 km peripheral road around Kolkata is being considered as a major alternative route for long-distance traffic.

The project could allow heavy vehicles and freight traffic travelling between different parts of the region to bypass the congested urban core. This could reduce pressure on existing roads while improving the movement of goods across Kolkata and its surrounding areas.

For a city that serves as a major commercial and logistics hub for eastern India, a large peripheral road could also improve connectivity between industrial zones, highways, ports, logistics hubs and neighbouring districts.

Siliguri Ring Road to Strengthen Northeast Connectivity

The proposed ring road around Siliguri has an even broader strategic significance.

Siliguri is the principal road and rail gateway connecting mainland India with the Northeast. A large volume of freight and long-distance traffic passes through the region, putting considerable pressure on the city's existing road network.

A dedicated ring road could divert heavy transit traffic away from the urban area, improving movement through the Siliguri corridor while reducing congestion within the city.

The project could also strengthen connectivity towards North Bengal, Sikkim, Bhutan and the wider Northeast.

₹1,200 Crore Approved for Six Road Projects

The ₹1,200 crore CRIF allocation will support six road projects in West Bengal. The discussions with NHAI also covered improvements to existing state and national highways, bridges and other regional road infrastructure.

Together, these projects point towards a broader effort to strengthen Bengal’s road network and improve connectivity beyond Kolkata and the major urban centres.

A Bigger Infrastructure Network for Bengal

The proposed Kolkata and Siliguri ring roads are particularly significant because they could address two different but interconnected challenges: urban congestion and long-distance freight movement.

If implemented as planned, the projects could create alternative routes for heavy traffic, improve travel efficiency and strengthen Bengal’s position as a logistics and connectivity hub for eastern and northeastern India.

For Kolkata, the proposed peripheral road could reshape the way freight moves around the metropolitan region. For Siliguri, a ring road could help improve the movement of traffic through one of India’s most strategically important transportation corridors.

With ₹1,200 crore already approved for six road projects and larger ring-road proposals being explored, West Bengal’s road infrastructure pipeline is gaining significant momentum.

Kolkata and Siliguri could be at the centre of Bengal’s next major road connectivity transformation.
