Kolkata’s long-awaited Purple Line (Joka–Park Street) project has received a significant boost with the resolution of a key land-related hurdle. Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the implementing agency of the project, has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Consulate General of Nepal to exchange strategic land parcels required for the next phase of construction.
The Purple Line currently runs an elevated stretch of 8 km from Joka to Majherhat. Beyond Mominpur, the corridor is designed to shift into a 5 km underground section until Esplanade, a critical part of the Metro network intended to directly connect South Kolkata to the city’s commercial hub.
However, construction of the underground ramp between Mominpur and Khidirpur had been delayed due to the need for specific land parcels owned by the Nepal Consulate.
The newly signed MoU resolves this issue.
As part of the land swap:
This mutually beneficial arrangement paves the way for immediate progress on the ramp structure that marks the transition from elevated to underground tracks.
The Purple Line is expected to become one of the most important metro corridors for Kolkata. Once the Mominpur–Esplanade stretch is operational, residents from Joka, Behala, and Thakurpukur will finally get direct, fast, and uninterrupted access to central Kolkata.
This breakthrough not only brings the project back on track but also strengthens Kolkata’s ongoing mission to modernize and expand its urban transport infrastructure.
Kolkata continues to move forward, one breakthrough at a time. The Purple Line is not just a metro corridor; it’s a lifeline that will redefine connectivity for thousands of daily commuters.
Kolkata is transforming and we’re here to bring you every update.
