The proposed alignment of the Kolkata Ring Road has emerged, offering a clearer picture of one of the largest planned road infrastructure projects for the Kolkata Metropolitan Region.

The Ring Road is being planned to divert inter-district traffic and heavy commercial vehicles away from Kolkata's congested core. By creating an outer bypass, the project aims to improve freight movement, reduce travel time and ease traffic congestion across the city.

Proposed Route

Western Corridor

The proposed alignment is expected to run along the Hooghly River, connecting areas near Vidyasagar Setu and Nivedita Setu. This section is intended to provide an alternative route for freight traffic travelling to and from Kolkata Port.

Southern Corridor

From Howrah, the Ring Road is likely to pass through Panchla and Bauria before crossing the Hooghly River near Budge Budge via a proposed new bridge. It is then expected to continue through Maheshtala, Garden Reach, Diamond Harbour Road, Amtala, Sonarpur and Baruipur.

Northern and Eastern Corridor

The northern section is expected to connect with the Kona Expressway, Belghoria Expressway and Kalyani Expressway before extending towards the Basanti Highway and Basirhat, creating a continuous outer road network around the metropolitan region.

Why the Project Matters

Once completed, the Kolkata Ring Road is expected to:

  • Divert heavy commercial and long-distance traffic away from central Kolkata.
  • Reduce congestion on key city roads.
  • Improve connectivity between Howrah, Kolkata, South 24 Parganas and North 24 Parganas.
  • Strengthen logistics and freight movement for industries and Kolkata Port.
  • Support future urban and economic growth across the Kolkata Metropolitan Region.

Although the alignment is still at the proposal stage, the project has the potential to become one of the most transformative transport infrastructure developments in eastern India, significantly enhancing mobility and connectivity across Greater Kolkata.
