Kolkata’s iconic Kumortuli is set for a major ₹10 crore makeover, with the Adani Group redeveloping a 300-metre stretch along the Hooghly River from Kumortuli to Champatala Ghat. The project aims to transform the riverside into a more attractive public and tourism destination while preserving the neighbourhood’s historic character and traditional identity.

₹10 Crore Kumortuli Redevelopment Project

The redevelopment focuses on improving the Hooghly riverfront while creating new public spaces for residents, visitors and tourists. The 300-metre stretch will feature a wide promenade along with seating areas designed to make the riverside more accessible and visitor-friendly.

The project will also include a boating zone, food park and exhibition gallery, adding new recreational and cultural attractions to the area.

The redevelopment is being undertaken with an emphasis on protecting Kumortuli’s heritage. Historic temples, traditional houses and other important structures in the neighbourhood are expected to be preserved as part of the transformation.

Focus on Kumortuli’s Artisans and Cultural Heritage

Kumortuli is globally recognised for its community of traditional idol makers, particularly for the intricate clay idols created for Kolkata’s Durga Puja celebrations.

The redevelopment is also expected to improve conditions for more than 300 artisans working in the area. By creating better infrastructure and showcasing their work through dedicated spaces, the project could help bring greater visibility to Kumortuli’s craftsmanship throughout the year.

The exhibition gallery, in particular, could provide an opportunity to showcase the history, techniques and artistic traditions associated with Kumortuli beyond the annual Durga Puja season.

Kumortuli to Become a Major Heritage-Tourism Destination

The redevelopment comes alongside a broader tourism push for the historic neighbourhood.

The West Bengal Tourism Department is preparing a master plan to develop Kumortuli as a major heritage-tourism destination. The objective is to strengthen the area's appeal as a year-round destination while retaining its traditional character.

With its centuries-old artistic traditions, narrow lanes, historic buildings and close connection with Kolkata’s Durga Puja culture, Kumortuli has significant potential to become one of the city's key cultural tourism hubs.

A coordinated heritage-tourism strategy could also create new opportunities for local artisans, businesses and visitors while helping preserve the neighbourhood's unique identity.

Redevelopment Ahead of Durga Pujo

Work on the project is being fast-tracked ahead of this year's Durga Puja celebrations.

The redeveloped ghat is expected to be inaugurated on September 24, providing a new riverside attraction just ahead of the festive season. Administrative sources have indicated that Gautam Adani is likely to attend the inauguration.

The timing is significant as Kumortuli becomes one of Kolkata's busiest cultural centres in the months leading up to Durga Puja, when artisans work intensively to complete thousands of idols.

A New Chapter for Kolkata’s Heritage

The Kumortuli redevelopment represents an attempt to combine heritage conservation, public infrastructure and tourism development in one of Kolkata's most culturally significant neighbourhoods.

If successfully implemented, the project could offer visitors a better way to experience Kumortuli while providing improved working and public spaces for the artisans who have sustained its artistic traditions for generations.

For Kolkata, Kumortuli is much more than an idol-making hub. It is an integral part of the city's cultural identity. The upcoming redevelopment could help ensure that its heritage remains accessible and relevant to future generations while opening the neighbourhood to a wider audience of domestic and international visitors.
