Mitsubishi Explores Semiconductor Manufacturing Project in West Bengal
West Bengal has taken another significant step towards strengthening its semiconductor manufacturing ambitions, with Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi Group exploring the possibility of setting up a semiconductor manufacturing project in the state.
Representatives from Mitsubishi Chemical Group recently met senior officials of the Government of West Bengal to discuss the proposed investment. According to officials, another round of discussions is scheduled for the fourth week of July as both sides work towards evaluating the project's feasibility and investment requirements.
West Bengal Offers Land in Durgapur and Panagarh
To facilitate the proposed project, the state government has offered land in Durgapur and Panagarh, two of Bengal's key industrial centres.
Officials stated that the semiconductor project would require a relatively small land parcel, making it easier for the government to allocate land quickly if the proposal moves forward.
Durgapur and Panagarh have emerged as important industrial destinations due to their established infrastructure, connectivity and availability of industrial land, making them attractive locations for advanced manufacturing investments.
Bengal Unveils Manufacturing-Focused Growth Strategy
The discussions with Mitsubishi come as the West Bengal government prepares to launch a new industrial policy aimed at attracting both domestic and global investors.
According to the government, the new industrial policy will be followed by dedicated startup, industrial incentive and power policies over the next three months. These reforms are expected to improve the state's ease of doing business and accelerate industrial development.
The government has also announced its intention to move from a permission-based regulatory framework to a facilitation-based approach, enabling faster approvals and greater investor support.
Semiconductors Among Priority Sectors
West Bengal has outlined an ambitious target of becoming a major manufacturing hub by 2031.
To achieve this vision, the state is prioritising investments across several strategic sectors, including:
- Semiconductor manufacturing
- Global Capability Centres (GCCs)
- Industrial corridors
- Mining and critical minerals
- Logistics
- Industrial parks
The state's focus on semiconductors aligns with India's broader push to develop a domestic semiconductor ecosystem and reduce dependence on imports while attracting global technology manufacturers.
What the Mitsubishi Project Could Mean for Bengal
Although the proposal remains at the discussion stage, Mitsubishi's interest reflects growing confidence in West Bengal's industrial ecosystem and investment potential.
If the project materialises, it would mark another important milestone in the state's efforts to attract high-value manufacturing investments and strengthen its position in India's evolving semiconductor landscape.
Combined with upcoming industrial policy reforms and continued infrastructure development, such investments could create new employment opportunities, enhance technological capabilities and reinforce Bengal's long-term manufacturing ambitions.
As discussions continue later this month, industry observers will closely watch whether Mitsubishi becomes one of the global companies investing in West Bengal's next phase of industrial growth.
