SAIL Approves ₹1,714 Crore Modernisation Plan for Durgapur Alloy Steels Plant
Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has approved a ₹1,714 crore investment plan to modernise and expand its Alloy Steels Plant (ASP) in Durgapur, West Bengal. The proposed investment aims to strengthen the plant's production infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and increase manufacturing capacity.
The decision marks an important development for Durgapur's industrial sector, particularly for a plant that has faced years of financial losses, disinvestment attempts and uncertainty over its long-term future.
SAIL's Modernisation Plan for Durgapur
The proposal received first-phase approval at SAIL's 537th board meeting held on September 25. The project will focus on upgrading existing technology, modernising production facilities and improving the overall efficiency of the Alloy Steels Plant.
The completion timeline is estimated at 30–36 months following second-phase clearance. However, the project commencement date, specific production targets and employment figures have not yet been announced.
A Boost for Durgapur's Industrial Sector
The proposed investment is expected to support the long-term operational future of the Durgapur Alloy Steels Plant. The facility has faced prolonged financial challenges, alongside previous disinvestment attempts and speculation about relocation.
Workers' unions have welcomed the approval, viewing it as a significant outcome of their sustained efforts to secure the plant's future.
The modernisation initiative could reinforce Durgapur's position as a key industrial centre in West Bengal. Its long-term impact will depend on project execution, improvements in production efficiency and the plant's ability to strengthen its operational performance.
With the ₹1,714 crore plan receiving initial approval, the next phase of the process will be crucial in determining the project's implementation timeline and the future direction of the Alloy Steels Plant.
