West Bengal’s industrial landscape is set for a significant boost as Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has awarded a major modernization contract to Germany-based SMS Group for its Durgapur Steel Plant.

The project focuses on upgrading two 6-strand, six-meter billet casting machines, aimed at improving casting efficiency and enhancing the production of long steel products. This modernization is expected to increase the plant’s overall capacity by more than 60%, marking a substantial leap in output and operational performance.

Phased Implementation Plan

The upgrade will be executed in two phases:

  • Billet Caster No. 1 is scheduled to become operational by Q4 2027
  • Billet Caster No. 2 will commence operations by Q3 2028

Strengthening Durgapur’s Industrial Role

The Durgapur Steel Plant has long been a key pillar of West Bengal’s industrial ecosystem. This latest investment reinforces its importance in India’s steel manufacturing sector while aligning with broader national goals under infrastructure development and “Make in India.”

With enhanced production capabilities, improved efficiency, and long-term growth potential, the modernization project is expected to contribute to regional economic development, job creation, and increased competitiveness in the steel sector.

As Bengal continues to attract strategic industrial investments, this development stands out as another strong signal of the state’s growing manufacturing momentum.
