West Bengal’s industrial landscape could soon witness a significant boost as Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) moves ahead with plans to expand the capacity of the Durgapur Steel Plant (DSP) by an additional 3.0 Million Tonnes Per Annum (MTPA).
As part of the expansion roadmap, SAIL has appointed M. N. Dastur & Co. (P) Ltd. to prepare a comprehensive Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed new facility. The consultancy will provide end-to-end advisory support covering technical, environmental, logistical, and financial planning aspects of the project.
Currently, the Durgapur Steel Plant operates at a capacity of 2.7 MTPA, with an ongoing expansion expected to add 0.72 MTPA. If the newly proposed 3.0 MTPA project moves forward, the plant’s total production capacity could rise to 6.42 MTPA in the near future, more than doubling its existing scale.
The proposed expansion highlights renewed momentum in West Bengal’s heavy industry sector. Increased steel production capacity is expected to support infrastructure development, manufacturing growth, and regional economic activity while reinforcing Durgapur’s position as one of eastern India’s key industrial hubs.
Large-scale investments such as this not only enhance industrial competitiveness but also generate employment opportunities and strengthen ancillary industries across the region.
As Bengal continues to attract industrial investments, projects like the Durgapur Steel Plant expansion underline the state’s growing importance in India’s manufacturing and infrastructure growth story.
