West Bengal Approves New Legislative Assembly Complex in New Town

West Bengal has approved the construction of a new Legislative Assembly complex in New Town, marking a significant step towards strengthening the state's legislative infrastructure for the decades ahead. The proposed complex will come up on a 40-acre site and is designed to accommodate the evolving needs of the state's legislature, particularly in light of future delimitation and the implementation of women's reservation.

New Assembly Complex Planned for a Larger Legislature

The decision to build a new Assembly complex comes as policymakers anticipate an increase in the number of elected representatives in the future. West Bengal currently has 294 Assembly constituencies. However, the implementation of delimitation, along with the Women's Reservation Act, is expected to increase the Assembly's strength to more than 400 members.

The existing Assembly building in central Kolkata, while historically significant, has limitations in accommodating a substantially larger legislature. The new complex in New Town is expected to provide modern facilities, larger legislative chambers, administrative offices, committee rooms, media facilities, visitor amenities, parking, and other supporting infrastructure required for a contemporary legislative institution.

Historic Assembly Building to Be Preserved

The current Legislative Assembly building, a pre-Independence landmark that has served as the centre of Bengal's legislative process for decades, will continue to be preserved as part of the state's rich political and architectural heritage.

The West Bengal government has clarified that the heritage building will not be demolished. A decision regarding its future use will be taken separately, ensuring that the historic structure continues to remain an important part of Kolkata's legacy.

Why Newtown?

Over the past two decades, New Town has emerged as one of West Bengal's fastest-growing administrative, commercial, and institutional hubs. The township already houses several government offices, educational institutions, IT parks, convention centres, healthcare facilities, and major public infrastructure projects.

The addition of a new Legislative Assembly complex further strengthens New Town's position as a key centre for governance and public administration while supporting the region's long-term urban development.
