The Government of West Bengal has approved the assignment of 1,688.15 acres of leasehold land belonging to JSW Bengal Steel Ltd. (JSWBSL) in favour of JSW Thermal Energy Ltd., marking a significant step towards the expansion of JSW Group’s power infrastructure in the state.
With this approval, JSW Group will double the capacity of its Salboni thermal power project to 3,200 MW, reinforcing Salboni’s growing importance as a strategic energy and industrial hub in West Bengal. The expansion will also take the total investment in the project to approximately ₹40,000 crore, making it one of the largest private-sector investments in the state’s power sector.
The additional land will be utilised for setting up a new thermal power plant, aimed at strengthening electricity generation capacity and supporting the rising power demand from industries, businesses, and urban centres across eastern India. The project is expected to play a crucial role in ensuring long-term energy security while enabling large-scale industrial development in the region.
Beyond power generation, the expanded Salboni project is likely to create significant direct and indirect employment opportunities, boost allied industries, and improve regional infrastructure. It also signals strong investor confidence in West Bengal’s industrial policies and its focus on facilitating large-scale, capital-intensive projects.
Salboni, which already hosts major industrial assets, is steadily emerging as a key destination for energy and manufacturing investments. The latest approval underlines the state government’s commitment to positioning West Bengal as a competitive and future-ready industrial powerhouse.
As West Bengal continues to attract marquee investments, the expansion of JSW’s Salboni power project stands out as a milestone in the state’s journey towards sustainable industrial and economic growth.
