₹3,000 Crore Ropeway Project Could Cut Kurseong–Darjeeling Travel Time to 45 Minutes
Darjeeling could soon get a major new connectivity project as the West Bengal Government explores a proposed ₹3,000 crore ropeway link between Kurseong and Darjeeling. The project is aimed at providing an alternative to road travel, easing congestion on the Hill Cart Road and improving connectivity to one of Bengal’s most popular tourist destinations.
According to reports, a feasibility study has found the proposed ropeway project viable. The state government is now considering private sector participation under the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model.
Kurseong–Darjeeling Ropeway Could Reduce Travel Time
The proposed ropeway could significantly reduce travel time between Kurseong and Darjeeling, particularly during the peak tourist season.
Road journeys to Darjeeling can take around 4–5 hours during periods of heavy traffic and congestion. The proposed ropeway could potentially bring the travel time down to approximately 45 minutes, providing tourists and residents with a faster alternative to road transportation.
The project could feature around four to five stations along the route, with the proposed stops potentially serving important tourist destinations and settlements.
Ropeway Could Also Transport Essential Supplies
The proposed project is not expected to focus only on tourism. The ropeway could also have a logistics component, with the system potentially being used at night to transport essential commodities to Darjeeling.
Food grains, vegetables and other daily-use supplies could be transported through the ropeway, reducing the dependence on trucks travelling along the Hill Cart Road.
This could help reduce heavy vehicle movement and congestion on one of the key road corridors connecting the Darjeeling hills.
Private Participation Being Considered
The West Bengal Government is reportedly considering developing the project with private sector participation under the BOOT model.
Under this model, a private entity would develop and operate the infrastructure for an agreed period before transferring the asset back to the government, subject to the final project structure and agreements.
The proposed ₹3,000 crore investment would make the Kurseong–Darjeeling ropeway one of the major upcoming infrastructure projects in the Darjeeling hills if it moves forward.
Possible Kalimpong–Gangtok Ropeway in the Future
West Bengal is also considering the possibility of developing another ropeway connection between Kalimpong and Gangtok.
The proposed route could provide an alternative connectivity option when landslides or other disruptions affect NH10, which is a critical road link between the region and Sikkim.
A network of ropeway-based connections could eventually provide the region with additional transport options, particularly in areas where mountainous terrain and landslides can frequently disrupt road connectivity.
Boost for North Bengal Tourism and Connectivity
The proposed Kurseong–Darjeeling ropeway could have a wider impact on tourism and infrastructure in North Bengal.
Darjeeling attracts visitors throughout the year, with road congestion becoming a major challenge during peak tourist periods. A faster ropeway connection could offer tourists another way to access the hills while potentially reducing pressure on existing roads.
The project could also improve the movement of essential goods and strengthen connectivity between settlements along the route.
If implemented, the Kurseong–Darjeeling ropeway could become an important addition to West Bengal’s tourism and transport infrastructure, while the proposed Kalimpong–Gangtok connection could further strengthen regional connectivity across the eastern Himalayas.
The projects are still at the planning and consideration stage, and further details regarding alignment, stations, investment structure, timelines and implementation will depend on subsequent government decisions and project approvals.
