West Bengal’s ₹539 crore Balagarh mini port project in Hooghly has moved a step closer to development, with work on a 4-km approach road and bridges launched at Baruipara. Located at Sripur Char along the Ganga, the project aims to strengthen inland waterway transportation, improve cargo movement and reduce pressure on Kolkata’s Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port.

Spread across 900 acres, the proposed port is expected to become an important addition to Bengal’s logistics and cargo-handling infrastructure. The project is also expected to create employment opportunities and support economic activity across Hooghly and neighbouring regions.

Balagarh Mini Port Project Details

The Balagarh mini port is being developed with a planned investment of ₹539 crore. Its location along the Ganga is expected to support cargo transportation through inland waterways and improve connectivity between industrial and commercial centres.

The project will include a port terminal and two jetties designed to handle cargo and container vessels. According to the chief engineer, the Union Government has allocated ₹130 crore towards the project.

As part of the latest development, work on the 4-km approach road and bridges has been launched at Baruipara. These infrastructure improvements are expected to strengthen access to the proposed port and support its integration with the wider road and transport network.

How the Balagarh Port Could Strengthen Bengal’s Logistics Network

The proposed mini port is intended to ease cargo-handling pressure on Kolkata’s Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port by expanding the use of inland waterways for freight transportation.

With road, rail and waterway connectivity playing an important role in logistics, the Balagarh project could improve the movement of goods across Hooghly and surrounding industrial areas. Inland waterway transportation can also provide an additional option for moving bulk cargo and containers, depending on operational capacity and connectivity.

The development could support businesses involved in logistics, warehousing, transportation and cargo handling. Improved access to the port may also create opportunities for local trade and related commercial activities.

Balagarh Mini Port Project Expected to Generate 16,500–21,500 Jobs

Employment generation is one of the key anticipated benefits of the project. Officials have projected around 1,500 direct jobs and 15,000–20,000 indirect employment opportunities.

Direct employment could arise from port operations, cargo handling, administration and related activities, while indirect opportunities may emerge across transportation, logistics, supporting services and local businesses.

The scale of employment will ultimately depend on the project's implementation, operational capacity and the growth of associated commercial activities.

Balagarh Port Project Targets Completion Within Two Years

The Balagarh mini port project is expected to be completed within two years, according to the project timeline outlined by officials. The ongoing approach road and bridge works mark an important step in developing the supporting infrastructure required for the proposed facility.

Once operational, the port could contribute to the expansion of inland waterway cargo transportation in West Bengal and strengthen Hooghly's role in the state's logistics network.

The project forms part of the broader potential for infrastructure-led economic activity in Bengal, where improved connectivity can support industrial movement, trade and employment. Its long-term impact will depend on timely execution, transport integration and the volume of cargo handled.

With a planned investment of ₹539 crore, a 900-acre development area and two proposed jetties, the Balagarh mini port remains a significant upcoming infrastructure project to watch in Hooghly.
