Bengal to Revamp Asia's Largest Flower Market into a World-Class Floral Trading Hub

The Government of West Bengal is preparing a comprehensive redevelopment plan for Mallick Ghat Flower Market near the Howrah Bridge, with the aim of transforming Asia's largest flower market into a modern, world-class floral trading hub.

The proposed revamp focuses on upgrading infrastructure, introducing modern marketing systems and establishing a dedicated cold storage facility. These improvements are expected to reduce post-harvest losses, extend the shelf life of flowers and improve returns for thousands of flower growers and traders who depend on the market for their livelihoods.

Located along the eastern bank of the Hooghly River, Mallick Ghat Flower Market spans approximately 7.8 acres and stretches nearly 1.5 kilometres along the riverfront. The market traces its origins to the historic Nimai Mullick Ghat, constructed in 1855, making it one of Kolkata's oldest and most iconic trading centres.

Every morning, the vibrant marketplace attracts between 2,500 and 4,000 traders, while handling nearly 50 tonnes of fresh flowers sourced from different parts of West Bengal and neighbouring states. From marigolds and roses to tuberoses, orchids and seasonal flowers, the market plays a vital role in supplying flowers for religious ceremonies, weddings, festivals and commercial use across eastern India.

The proposed modernisation is expected to significantly improve the efficiency of the floral supply chain. The addition of cold storage facilities will help preserve flower quality, minimise wastage and enable traders to access new domestic and international markets. Modern marketing infrastructure is also expected to enhance price discovery and improve transparency within the trading ecosystem.

The redevelopment aligns with West Bengal's broader vision of strengthening its floriculture sector, promoting export-oriented agriculture and increasing farmer incomes. With better infrastructure and logistics, Mallick Ghat has the potential to emerge as a globally competitive floral trading centre while preserving its historic identity and cultural significance.

Beyond its commercial importance, Mallick Ghat Flower Market remains one of Kolkata's most photographed landmarks, attracting tourists, photographers and visitors from around the world. Its colourful lanes beneath the iconic Howrah Bridge have become synonymous with the city's heritage and everyday life.

If implemented successfully, the redevelopment will not only modernise one of Asia's largest flower markets but also reinforce Kolkata's position as a leading hub for floriculture, agricultural trade and export-driven economic growth.
