Kolkata could soon witness a major improvement in its late-night public transport network. The West Bengal Transport Department has proposed introducing 10 PM bus services on eight important routes across Kolkata and adjoining areas, with the primary objective of improving connectivity to major government and private hospitals after regular operating hours.

The proposed initiative is expected to benefit patients, healthcare workers, hospital visitors and thousands of late-evening commuters who often face limited public transport options after 10 PM.

According to the proposal, the new night services will operate on key routes including Howrah–Barrackpore, Howrah–Garia, Dunlop–Ballygunge, Rajabazar–Mourigram, Ultadanga–Eco Space, Howrah–Kamalgazi and Barasat–Garia. Each route is expected to have two to three departures after 10 PM, significantly strengthening the city's public transport network during late hours.

The proposed routes have been designed to connect major transport hubs with some of Kolkata's busiest healthcare institutions, including Medical College and Hospital, RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, SSKM Hospital, Tata Medical Centre and Ruby General Hospital. The buses will travel through important corridors such as EM Bypass, VIP Road, BT Road, Park Street, Sealdah, Gariahat and New Town, ensuring better accessibility across the metropolitan region.

The Transport Department has also clarified that the existing 10 PM services on VS-2 and S-10A will continue without any changes.

If approved and implemented, the proposal will make late-night travel safer and more convenient while supporting the city's healthcare ecosystem. Improved night-time connectivity is expected to reduce dependence on expensive private transport, enhance accessibility to emergency medical services and strengthen Kolkata's public transport infrastructure.

The proposal reflects the state's continued efforts to modernise urban mobility and make Kolkata's transport network more inclusive, reliable and accessible for residents around the clock.
