Kolkata is set to witness a crucial step forward in its metro expansion as work at Chingrighata for the Orange Line is scheduled to begin in May.
After months of delay, Kolkata Police have granted permission for traffic diversion along the EM Bypass, allowing Metro Railway authorities to proceed with construction at one of the most critical points of the corridor.
To ensure smooth traffic movement during this phase, a 500-metre parallel road has been developed alongside the Chingrighata flyover. This temporary arrangement will help manage vehicular flow while construction work takes place above.
According to sources, the construction work will be carried out during late-night hours on weekends to minimise disruption:
This strategic scheduling is expected to reduce the impact on one of the busiest traffic corridors in East Kolkata.
The primary objective of this phase is to complete the 366-metre viaduct gap at Chingrighata. This missing link has been one of the major hurdles in operationalising the stretch between New Garia and Sector V under the Orange Line.
Once this gap is successfully bridged, it will pave the way for continuous metro connectivity along this corridor.
The completion of this stretch will enable metro trains to run directly from New Garia to Sector V, significantly improving daily commute options for thousands of people travelling across the eastern part of the city.
The Orange Line is a key infrastructure project aimed at strengthening Kolkata’s public transport network and reducing dependence on road-based travel along the congested EM Bypass corridor.
While only a short stretch remains, this phase of construction is critical for making the corridor fully functional. The upcoming work at Chingrighata marks steady progress towards completing one of Kolkata’s most anticipated metro routes.
