Howrah–Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper Express Proposal Gains Momentum
A proposed Vande Bharat Sleeper Express between Howrah and New Delhi via Dhanbad is reportedly gaining momentum, raising hopes of faster and more comfortable overnight rail connectivity between West Bengal and the national capital. The service is expected to strengthen the railway connection between eastern India and Delhi, although its final route, timetable and journey duration are yet to be confirmed.
According to reports, the proposal was discussed at a railway meeting held in Navi Mumbai between October 8 and 10. The proposed service is said to have received approval during the meeting, but it still awaits final clearance from the Railway Board before it can move towards implementation.
Howrah–Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper Could Offer Faster Travel
If approved, the Howrah–New Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper Express could potentially offer a faster journey than the existing Rajdhani Express. The proposed route via Dhanbad would connect Howrah with the national capital while serving as part of the broader effort to modernise India's long-distance railway network.
However, the anticipated travel time, operational speed, stopping pattern and launch date have not yet been officially confirmed. The actual journey duration will depend on the final route plan, infrastructure readiness and railway operational decisions.
Grand Chord Upgrades to Support Faster Train Operations
The proposed service comes amid infrastructure upgrades along the Grand Chord section, a key railway corridor connecting eastern India with northern India. Improvements to railway infrastructure and speed trials are aimed at supporting faster train operations along this important route.
The Grand Chord plays a significant role in long-distance passenger and freight movement. Enhancing its capacity and operational efficiency could help Indian Railways improve connectivity between Howrah, Dhanbad, Delhi and other important destinations along the corridor.
Indian Railways Plans More Than 200 Vande Bharat Sleeper Trainsets
Indian Railways is also moving ahead with plans to expand its Vande Bharat Sleeper fleet, with more than 200 trainsets reportedly planned. Manufacturing assignments involve companies and organisations including BEML, Kinet, the Titagarh–BHEL consortium and Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai.
The sleeper variant of the Vande Bharat platform is intended to bring modern train technology to overnight journeys, combining long-distance travel with upgraded passenger amenities and improved onboard comfort.
The proposed Howrah–Delhi service would align with this broader expansion, subject to the availability of trainsets, infrastructure readiness and the necessary approvals.
What It Could Mean for Kolkata and Bengal
For passengers travelling between Kolkata and Delhi, a Vande Bharat Sleeper service could provide another modern rail travel option. Faster overnight connectivity could benefit business travellers, students, professionals and families who regularly travel between West Bengal and the national capital.
For now, the proposal remains subject to final Railway Board approval. Further details regarding the launch date, ticket fares, stoppages and expected journey duration are awaited.
If cleared, the Howrah–Delhi Vande Bharat Sleeper Express could become an important addition to India's evolving long-distance rail network and further strengthen connectivity between Bengal and northern India.
