Kolkata could see a major expansion in its air connectivity as West Bengal pushes for direct flights to the UK and other European destinations while advancing plans for new and expanded airport infrastructure across the state.

The West Bengal government has sought direct international air services connecting Kolkata with the UK and other parts of Europe. The move is aimed at strengthening Kolkata’s position as an international aviation hub and improving connectivity for passengers travelling between eastern India and major global destinations.

As part of the wider aviation expansion, the state has also sought additional air services at Andal Airport in Durgapur. Expanding connectivity from the airport could improve access to air travel for residents and businesses across the industrial belt of West Bengal and neighbouring regions.

Another major proposal is the development of a new airport near Kolkata. The state government has identified around 2,000 acres of land at Kalyani for the proposed airport and has indicated that it is prepared to provide land for expanding airport infrastructure.

The proposed Kalyani airport could play an important role in meeting the region’s long-term aviation requirements as passenger traffic and demand for air connectivity continue to grow. It could also provide additional capacity for the Kolkata metropolitan region and support the development of surrounding areas.

The state’s aviation plans also extend to pilot training. Alongside the UDAN agreement signed with the Ministry of Civil Aviation, West Bengal has sought approval for advanced pilot-training infrastructure at Behala Flying Club.

The proposed infrastructure is expected to create more opportunities for young people looking to pursue careers as pilots while strengthening aviation-related skill development within the state.

The government sees improved air connectivity and airport infrastructure as important drivers of economic growth. Better connectivity could support passenger movement, create employment opportunities and strengthen trade in sectors such as agriculture and food processing.

With direct UK and European flights being sought, additional services planned for Andal and land identified at Kalyani for a new airport, West Bengal is looking at aviation as a key part of its long-term infrastructure and economic development strategy.

For Kolkata, the focus on international connectivity could further strengthen the city’s role as an important gateway to eastern India and a link between the region and global markets.
