Sealdah Railway Station Set for Major Recreation and Retail Upgrade

Sealdah Railway Station is set for a major upgrade with a new recreation zone that will bring shopping, dining, entertainment and short-term accommodation facilities to one of Kolkata’s busiest railway stations.

Eastern Railway has awarded a contract for the development, operation and maintenance of the facility, which will come up across three upper floors and a terrace. The ground floor, which has already been developed by the Railways, will remain outside the licensed area.

The upcoming recreation zone will feature a multiplex, game zone, food court, cafeterias, retail outlets and paid sleeping pods. The retail section is expected to include stores selling groceries and daily-use products, apparel, accessories and electronics.

Eastern Railway also plans to bring national and international food brands that are currently not available at Sealdah. This will add new dining options for passengers as well as visitors using the station.

Multiplex, Game Zone and Sleeping Pods

The entertainment component of the project will include a multiplex and game zone, giving passengers and visitors additional leisure options within the station complex.

Paid sleeping pods will also be introduced to provide short-term accommodation for passengers. Alongside these facilities, the food courts and cafeterias are expected to create a larger commercial and dining ecosystem within the station.

Public-Private Development Model

The contract is scheduled to commence on September 15, 2027. The project is being developed through a public-private arrangement, under which Eastern Railway will not have to bear the capital expenditure required for the construction, operation and maintenance of the facility.

The project is also expected to generate direct and indirect employment across sectors including retail, food and beverages, housekeeping, security, maintenance and other allied services.

According to Sealdah Divisional Railway Manager Rajeev Saxena, the project will bring shopping, dining, entertainment and accommodation facilities together at the railway station.

Partition Memorial Also Coming Up at Sealdah

Separately, the Union Government is developing a memorial statue at Sealdah for victims of the 1947 Partition. The memorial is expected to be completed by November 2026.

With the upcoming recreation zone and the proposed memorial, Sealdah Railway Station is set to see significant changes in the facilities and experience it offers to passengers in the coming years.
