Kolkata May Revive ₹900 Crore Flyover Connecting New Town and Rajarhat
The West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Department is considering a series of infrastructure projects aimed at easing traffic congestion and enhancing connectivity across the Kolkata Metropolitan Area. Among the proposals under review is the revival of a nearly 7-kilometre elevated corridor that would extend connectivity beyond Maa Flyover, linking Metropolitan with Mahishbathan via Chingrighata and Sector V.
The proposals were discussed during a high-level meeting at Nabanna attended by officials from the Urban Development Department, Kolkata Police, Howrah City Police, Bidhannagar City Police, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation (BMC), Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), and other infrastructure agencies.
₹900 Crore Flyover Proposal Back Under Consideration
The proposed flyover is expected to revive KMDA's earlier plan for an elevated corridor estimated to cost around ₹900 crore. The nearly 7 km-long flyover would begin near Metropolitan, pass through Chingrighata and Sector V, and terminate at Mahishbathan, creating a faster link between central and eastern Kolkata with New Town and Rajarhat.
If implemented, the corridor is expected to reduce travel time, ease traffic congestion on the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and adjoining roads, and improve access to Kolkata's rapidly growing IT and business districts in Sector V and New Town.
The project would also complement existing transport infrastructure, including Maa Flyover, the East-West Metro, and the expanding road network serving the city's eastern corridor.
Metro-Integrated Skywalk Proposed at Ruby
Another major proposal under examination is the revival of the Metro-integrated circular skywalk at Ruby Crossing. The project, estimated to cost around ₹88 crore, was originally planned to connect pedestrians directly with Hemanta Mukhopadhyay Metro station.
Ruby Crossing is one of Kolkata's busiest intersections, witnessing heavy traffic from the EM Bypass, Prince Anwar Shah Road Connector, and nearby commercial and healthcare hubs. The proposed skywalk aims to improve pedestrian safety while reducing conflicts between vehicles and foot traffic.
New Skywalk Planned for Dalhousie
The government is also evaluating the construction of a new skywalk in Dalhousie, one of Kolkata's busiest commercial districts. Thousands of office-goers, commuters and visitors move through the area every day, making pedestrian movement both challenging and time-consuming.
A modern skywalk could help streamline pedestrian flow, improve road safety, and reduce congestion at the intersection.
Focus on Improving Urban Mobility
The discussions at Nabanna reflect the state's continued focus on strengthening urban infrastructure and improving mobility across the Kolkata Metropolitan Area. Better road connectivity, safer pedestrian facilities, and integration with Metro Rail are key priorities as the city prepares for future growth.
Improved connectivity between Kolkata, Sector V, New Town and Rajarhat is expected to support economic activity, ease daily commuting for thousands of professionals, and enhance access to emerging residential and commercial hubs.
No Approval Yet
While the proposals have generated significant interest, it is important to note that they are currently under examination. The state government has not yet granted formal approval, announced funding allocations, or released construction timelines for either the flyover or the skywalk projects.
If approved, the projects would represent one of the most significant urban mobility upgrades planned for eastern Kolkata in recent years, reinforcing the city's long-term infrastructure development strategy.
