Kolkata Metro’s Orange Line is moving closer to another major milestone, with the 4.5-km extension from Beleghata to Salt Lake Sector V targeting passenger services by late December 2026 or the first week of January 2027.

According to Metro General Manager Prem Sagar Gupta, trial runs on the extended stretch began on October 10, covering the route up to Sector V’s IT Centre station. The extension is expected to strengthen connectivity between south Kolkata and the city's prominent IT and business district.

Track inspections and Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling tests are currently underway and are expected to continue through November. Following this, the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) will inspect the stretch before granting the mandatory safety clearance.

Commercial operations can begin only after the necessary approvals are secured and any corrective work identified during the inspection is completed.

Once operational, the extension will provide direct Metro connectivity between Kavi Subhash and Salt Lake Sector V. This will improve access to the IT hub, making daily commutes more convenient for thousands of IT professionals, office-goers and other passengers.

The Beleghata-Sector V extension is an important development for Kolkata's expanding Metro network. Improved connectivity to Salt Lake's commercial and technology district is also expected to support easier movement across the city and strengthen access to one of its key employment hubs.

With trial runs underway and safety inspections next in line, the Orange Line extension is progressing towards its targeted launch in early 2027.
